Modern Sorikkun

In 2021, not only in Korea but also around the world, the band "Lee Nalchi" and their song "A Tiger is Coming" caught people's attention with the fusion of Pansori and modern beats such as bass and drums. With just this one song, Pansori unexpectedly became a global keyword. Following this trend, there are sound creators who quickly catch the needs of the times and ride the waves of change, known as "Modern Sorikkun".

Representative Modern Sorikkun include Bae In-hye, the group ADG7, and the group Sorikkaengakgaekdan. Bae In-hye, the fifth-generation holder of intangible cultural heritage of Pansori and a creator of Pansori, is more interested in utilizing Pansori as a "weapon of creation" rather than preserving and inheriting traditional Pansori. Bae In-hye attempts to combine foreign stories with Pansori in works such as "Pilgyeongsa Battle Bee" and "Pansori Othello," and creates performances that combine Pansori, choir, and gut.

ADG7 is a group that tries various creations based on the music of the old Hwanghae Province, which is now part of North Korea, and delicately combines tradition and modernity without using electronic instruments, presenting a powerful and delightful rock band music sound with only traditional musical instruments and vocals.

Sorikkaengakgaekdan is a Korean traditional music group composed of female vocalists, adding a unique performance that reminds people of K-pop dance to Korean traditional music, and attempting new music.

As the world of "Modern Sorikkun" who continue to dynamically challenge in Korea, the birthplace of Pansori, while continuing to have intense discussions on the destruction and recreation of tradition, we explore the direction in which we can preserve and popularize our own originality.
