The Netflix Korean original series "D.P." will be returning for a second season, according to the streaming platform, Tuesday.

The new season will be led by the first season's director, Han Jun-hee, who will also co-script the season with writer Kim Bo-tong.

Based on the webtoon "D.P. Dog's Day," (direct translation) by Kim, the series follows the story of Private Ahn Joon-ho (Jung Hae-in) who is newly assigned to a special unit called Deserter Pursuit, known as "D.P." The unit specializes in tracking down military deserters and bringing them in.

Teaming up with Corporal Han Ho-yeol (Koo Kyo-hwan), Joon-ho and Ho-yeol confront different backstories of soldiers who flee from the military, as they chase them down.

The first series garnered popularity soon after premiering in August, soon topping the daily streaming chart in Korea and making it into the top 10 charts in various countries, including Japan, Vietnam and Thailand.

Earlier this month, the series was named as one of the "Best TV Shows of 2021" by The New York Times.

Noting that the show swings back and forth between "slapstick action and overflowing sentiment," The New York Times wrote: "The show is also a sensitive and forthright examination of how violent, sadistic bullying and rigid hierarchies drive young South Korean men to go to almost any length to escape their compulsory military service."

The release date for the series' new season has yet to be announced.
