[Interview] Director You Sun-dong: “To continue communicating with the masses through my works"
Where did the idea for [The Purloined Book] come from?

All of us have complaints about our situation, and we all at time envy and feel jealous of others. I can’t deny a lot of the emotions I felt as a producer and script writer were reflected in the main character. A lot of people ask me if it’s based on my own experiences, but I'm not that horrible a person. I’ve never stolen a script: let's make that clear. The people and situations in the work aren’t intended to represent real-life people.

What can you tell us about the movie <0.0MHz>, which you’re currently filming?

It’s a horror movie based on <0.0MHz>, a webtoon by the artist Jang Jak which was carried by Daum. The main actors are Jeong Eun-ji and Lee Seong-ryeol, and we're busy filming away. At the earliest, I see it premiering in December of this year or early next year. It’s the story of what happens when the members of 0.0MHz, a group of people who hunt down paranormal activity, go to a haunted house. I’ve been getting chills filming it, even.

Is there a particular item you would like to work on in the future?

I'd really like to turn [The Purloined Book] into a movie. A lot of people would like to see it happen, after encountering the work as a play, webtoon or novel. Another thing I’d like to do is create another work based on my own original ideas, just like [The Purloined Book]. It would be an erotic thriller. I want to make something that’s subtly erotic and thrilling at the same time - I don’t think cruelty or violence really does anything to make a work more enjoyable.

Tell us how assistance from KOCCA played a role.

[The Purloined Book] was only turned into a webtoon because KOCCA arranged for me to meet with Haksan Comics. One of the judges at KOCCA told me about them, you see. KOCCA operates a site called ‘Storyum,’ and it was really helpful in getting the work published as a novel. They’ve helped me create a play, a webtoon, and even a novel out of a story I wrote - and even export it overseas. I can’t thank them enough

Any future vision for your work as a filmmaker and scriptwriter?

I’d like to continue communicating with the masses through my works - for a long time. That’s the ultimate goal. I don’t care if it’s through movies and scripts, or through novels. Of course, having a runaway hit every now and then wouldn’t hurt. But above all, as a creative artist, the happiest thing for me is to have the masses experience my work.
