Venice International Film Festival "Best VR Experience Award."
Chae Soo-Eung, invited to the 75th Venice International Film Festival, was awarded the "Best VR Experience Award" for his work Buddy VR.
Buddy VR is a VR animation about overcoming difficulties with the lonely mouse Buddy.
The film is only complete when the audience communicates with Buddy and participates in the adventure during the 16-minute duration of the film.
Buddy VR has a simple story but a very complex underlying idea.
"I wanted to point out that a simple content can be interpreted in many different ways through communication and participation."
The adventure with Buddy is left as an "experience," not an "observation."
"As I had planned, the audience communicated with Buddy, and felt touched when Buddy acknowledged them.
Buddy VR started from the loneliness he felt when he put on a VR goggle.
He saw Buddy in Nut Job, and thought he would not feel lonely if he had a friend like that. That became the motif.
The core of Buddy VR likes in the technique of "interactive storytelling."
The movement of the audience becomes "critical" to the movie, and thus encourages their participation.
Globally, VR is only in the beginning stage. It is not unlikely that Korea will come to lead the market.
"If the audience is captivated by something new, then it is the creator's job to This is what Director Chae thinks is the primary task for the Korean film inudstry.
