Creating
My Imaginary World

“Rain Fruits,” a movie directed by Song Young-yun, is a VR film based on an autobiographical short story by “Thura,” a migrant worker from Myanmar. This work shone brightly, having been officially invited to the 360-degree art films segment of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and nominated for XR competition of France’s Cannes Film Festival. We met director Song Young-yun of “Rain Fruits” to talk with him.

Q. What kind of movie is “Rain Fruits”?

A. “Rain Fruits” is a 360-degree VR film dealing with what a migrant worker experienced in Korea as well as his resulting sense of alienation. It is a movie adapted from the writing by Thura who actually worked in Korea and reenacted what he experienced in Korea using point cloud1) and volumetric video capture2) techniques.

Q. How was “Rain Fruits” produced?

A. I took part in the “Content One Campus project” organized by the Korea Creative Content Agency last year. Of the 18 participants, 2 were selected through the proposal contest. The films “Scarecrow” and “Rain Fruits” were selected as the main projects and made.

Q. In which film genre does “Rain Fruits” belong?

A. Many people think that “Rain Fruits” is an XR movie because it was nominated for the XR competition of the Cannes Film Festival, but my movie belongs to the 360-degree VR cinema3) genre. XR movies mainly refer to those films wherein it’s possible to interact with participants ceaselessly based on 6DoF (Six Degrees of Freedom)4).

Q. How do you feel about being nominated for the XR competition of the 73rdCannesFilmFestival?

A. I was very delighted and honored since Cannes was the film festival dreamt of by all cineastes, but the nomination itself hardly inspired me. What really touched my heart and delighted me was how my family and people I know welcomed it and congratulated me profusely.

Q. After being invited to international events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival, your movie was selected for the “Beyond Reality subsection” of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.

A. It was much more real than Cannes. As I saw many works serve as references through the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival while carrying out my project, I was very glad to find that “my work could be a reference film to someone.”

Q. What made you start your film career?

A. I thought about making my movie after watching the film “Failan” directed by Song Hae-sung when I was in middle school. I followed the footsteps of Director Song and entered Hanyang University’s Department of Theater and Film. I have also had a strong desire to tell someone my narratives for a long time.

Q. What do you think is the charm of the movie?

A. In my opinion, the fact that one world can be created is the charm of the movie. It means that I can make the world as I imagine it. And the fact that someone watches, evaluates, and likes it without stopping at creating the world only makes the movie all the more attractive.

Q. Do you have any message you want to deliver through movies?

A. It’s “being real” and “people.” Cinema can never be real by nature because direction and editing are involved. Still, I think it is oriented toward “being real” all the time. I want to create a movie that makes the audience feel something real and commune with it during the directed moment rather than a real fake. I’d also like to convey stories about people’s existence and intrinsic human value and dignity through movies.

Q. Who is the film director you admire the most?

A. I respect all directors guarding the filming scenes fiercely at this very moment – those lifting cameras on the spot, doing the post-production work at the cutting room, and devising a synopsis at the café; they give me great courage and strength.

Q. Are there any actors you will definitely cast?

A. I’d like to work with nonprofessional actors. I want to work with them in an open way like the Dardenne Brothers rather than precut operations.

Q. We are anxious to know the dream and plan you want to realize.

A. I’d like to narrate my stories for a long, long time be they documentaries, films, or VR. My aim is to tell audiences more of my stories and receive lots of feedback. It’ll be good if my work affects other people positively.

Q. What is a good content?

A. A content that affects one’s life. I think it’s good content if it affects a tiny part of one’s life and prompts one to move on to better things.

2) Volumetric video capture: A technique displaying three-dimensional models or effects via two-dimensional formats, mainly used for video games

3) VR 360 cinema: A genre of VR film, making you feel as if you are at the scene by filming in all directions using several cameras

4) 6DoF: Refers to the freedom of movement in six directions, enabling audiences to see with six degrees of freedom
