The Lantern Lighting Festival, also known as Yeondeunghoe, may be added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
The annual event is enjoyed by thousands of people across the country in celebration of the birth of Buddha and has a history of more than 1,000 years.
The Cultural Heritage Administration said Tuesday that it has completed the necessary submission procedures and it will soon be under review.

The 2020 nominations will be held online and discussed during the Committee's 15th session, which runs from December 14th to 19th.
This year, a total of 42 nominations are eligible for inscription on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

If added, South Korea will have 21 cultural practices and properties listed by UNESCO, including traditional Korean wrestling, 'Ssirum', and the lyrical folk song 'Arirang'.
In 2008, the royal ancestral ritual of the Jongmyo shrine and its music was the country's first cultural heritage item to be officially recognized by UNESCO.
