It's Friday, and you know what that means, its time for our weekly 'Life With Culture' segment. Our arts and culture correspondent Kim Bo-kyoung is in the studio to share information on the art and performance industry, Bo-kyoung, instead of just telling us about the upcoming weekend, today you'll be giving us a line-up for the whole of 2021.
Hi, Conn-young, that's right. Last year was so tough for the performance industry due to the pandemic. Lots of shows were cancelled as they couldn't be performed while following health authorities' preventive measures. However, that ironically means 2021 is filled with more magnificent shows than usual. Today, I would like to share what's on the Korea National Opera and Korean National Ballet's 2021 line-up. Let's take a look.
Using the past year's suffering as experience, national organizations have prepared a much stronger line-up for 2021.
Though not fixed, the opera gala concert, which is made up of highlights from five operas, will be shown around April.
Showing in May, 'Brahms' entertains the audience with a series of opera songs based on Brahms and Schumann's melodies, showing Brahms' love story toward Clara.
Pucinni's opera 'The Girl of the West' was originally planned to be put on stage last year, but due to the pandemic, his blazing opera on the California Gold Rush will be shown this July.
Verdi's 'Nabucco' in August is another highlight.
Set to kick off around National Liberation Day at the remodeled National Theater of Korea, the opera's best-known number, the 'Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves', will touch the audience's heart.
The regularly played opera by Saint-Saens based on biblical tale 'Samson and Delilah' will be shown in October, and Verdi's 'La Traviata' in December.
Another fresh attempt is 'KNOmyOpera' which is set to open in February, looking to digitalize some of the national opera's shows so more people can watch.
"We are offering a system in which whoever wants to take a look at the KNO's shows can watch them online. Those who cannot buy tickets will be able to visit the site and enjoy previous opera performances. Some previous shows, and those shows that will be performed on stage in the future will all be archived."
The Korean National Ballet will also let more visitors watch shows that they couldn't enjoy due to the pandemic.
Among them will be 'Le Corsaire', based on an epic poem by Lord Byron, and the Korean National Ballet's version of George Balanchine's 'Jewels', the main repertoire by major ballet troupes will be shown for the first time in October.
Well, I feel lucky to know what the 2021 line-up will be in advance, and I'll definitely be checking the schedule to make sure I see the right shows at the right time.
Are there any other performances you would like to recommend?
Sure, those who are interested in Spanish culture will enjoy taking a look at the musical 'Bernarda Alba' at Jeongdong Theater as well as Joy of Springs' 'Alla Espana' at Seoul Arts Center.
Based on the play 'The House of Bernarda Alba', 18 actresses tell a thrilling story which explores themes of repression, passion, and conformity. It runs until mid-March.
And, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of bilateral ties between Korea and Spain, string ensemble Joy of Springs will perform songs by Spanish composers in their New Year concert at Seoul Arts Center on January 28th.
The Korean Symphony Orchestra plans to play Mozart's Oboe Concerto and Tchaikovsky's symphony 'Winter Daydreams' with the aim of giving people hope.
The show is going to be live at Seoul Arts Center on January 29th and can be streamed online through Naver TV.
Those looking for something creative this weekend, The Lee Jung-yeon Dance Project combines contemporary ballet with immersive augmented reality.
Moving onto exhibitions, the National Museum of Korea is giving an online lecture on January 26th on its special exhibition 'After Every Winter Comes Spring'.
And last but not least, singer-songwriter Harim presents songs from Europe through Hanam Cultural Foundation's Naver TV channel on January 28th, so anyone who wants to go on a musical journey might want to visit the link.
Thank you Bo-kyoung as always for sharing this information with us.
Thank you.
