The hit Korean movie Parasite, which swept the U.S. Academy Awards in 2020, features a mix of two popular types of Korean instant noodles black bean noodles and spicy ones.
This has grabbed the attention of people looking for new foods to cook at home amid social distancing measures.
With that, for the first time ever, exports of Korean ramyeon in 2020 surpassed 600 million U.S. dollars.

"With the influence of Korean content like movies and TV series, ramyeon has been gaining popularity with the convenience of its long shelf life as well as marketing that caters to local tastes…"

Kimchi sales are also up amid the pandemic, as are sales of Korean ginseng, as health awareness has been increasing.

The total exports of Korean agricultural products hit a new high of more than 7.5 billion dollars during the pandemic, an increase of more than 7 percent on-year, its largest increase in the past six years.

"Demand for kimchi and pastes have been increasing with young people abroad trying to follow Korean recipes online."

Exports of other ready-to-eat rice products such as the popular street food tteokbokki as well as rice porridge also increased last year by a whopping 26 percent.
The food industry is expected to ride the K-wave and strengthen the marketing of Korean food, highlighting health benefits as well as utilizing a range of content.
