Hit reality shows, like tvN's "New Journey to the West" and E Channel's "Sporty Sisters," will release spinoff series via various over-the-top (OTT) services.
TVING, a streaming service co-run by CJ ENM and JTBC, has teamed up with tvN's production teams to release two exclusive spinoff series: "Spring Camp" and "Idol Song Listening Contest" (direct translation).
"Spring Camp" is a spinoff series from "New Journey to the West," which has aired for eight seasons since 2015.
The new series, which will premiere on May 7, will star the cast members from the original show's latest season ― Kang Ho-dong, Lee Soo-geun, Eun Ji-won, Kyuhyun, P.O and Mino ― going on a camping trip. "Spring Camp" will also star returning member Ahn Jae-hyun, who left the series in 2019, following his divorce lawsuit with actress Koo Hye-sun.
"Idol Song Listening Contest" is a spinoff series from the popular tvN show, "Amazing Saturday," which invites celebrities to guess the lyrics of a song that are hard to make out.
The show, set to be released on May 21, will star completely new cast members, including K-pop stars Kai, Eunhyuk, and Mijoo, with the hosts from the original series, Boom and YouTuber Lickerish Hatnim. It will have a similar format to "Amazing Saturday.
Tcast E Channel's "Sporty Sisters," a reality show featuring Korea's female sports stars, will release a male version of the series on the local streaming platform Watcha, Wednesday.
The new series, "Sporty Bros," (direct translation) will star some of the big names in men's sports, including Olympic gold medalist fencer Gu Bon-gil, bronze medalist judoka Cho Jun-ho, and famous volleyball player Kim Yo-han. It will follow the format of the original series and show the cast members experiencing the "ordinary" things they missed out on during their professional sports careers.
"'Sporty Sisters' became popular by spotlighting female sports stars, and in that process, we discovered the potential to run a similar show on male sports stars as well, and began discussing this (spinoff) series," the series' chief producer Bang Hyun-young said. "'Sporty Bros' will put the limelight on the 'blood, sweat and tears' of the sports players, which was an aspect never previously shared with the public."
The production team of the popular food show, "Tasty Guys," also revealed that it is in talks to stream a spinoff sitcom of the show with various OTT platforms.
"We are discussing the release with global services, including Netflix, and local platforms such as Wavee, Seezn, and Watcha. We are aiming to premiere it later this year," the show's production company, Channel OCT said.
"Tasty Guys" follows four comedians ― Kim Min-kyung, Yoo Min-sang, Kim Joon-hyun, and Moon Se-yun ― who visit restaurants throughout the country to have a taste of their popular dishes.
The spinoff sitcom will be a mockumentary series about the series' crew and cast members filming episodes of "Tasty Guys."
