K-pop behemoth BTS has long been known for containing philosophical messages in their songs. But this time, the seven members decided to keep things more light-hearted. On Friday, BTS put out the uplifting summer song, "Butter," which focuses on the septet's bubbliness and vibrancy.
"As the title of our new digital single suggests, it is an easy-listening song, in which we make an adorable love confession," member Jimin said during a press conference at Olympic Hall in Olympic Park located in southern Seoul. The event was held an hour after the release of the song.
He bashfully smiled and added, "I am a bit embarrassed to talk about this, but through the lyrics, we say that we would melt people's hearts like butter ― we tried to showcase our diverse charms ranging from cuteness to charisma."
Jungkook explained that the tune gives off a refreshing vibe.
"'Butter' is a simple dance pop song," he added. "For me, it would be enough if a lot of people can enjoy the sweltering summer with this track."
Leader RM participated in penning the lyrics and making the rap portion of "Butter," which is the group's second English-language song after "Dynamite" (2020). During an hour-long session, he also revealed behind-the-scenes stories of his creative process.
"All our members are passionate about producing our own music, but this time, we did not take part in composing 'Butter' because it was already a decent piece from the beginning," he said. "But I felt that some parts of the rap did not match very well with our style, so I modified them. At first, my modification seemed incompatible with the song, but I could soon put them together thanks to my familiarity with American hip-hop and pop music."
The group's other rappers, Suga and j-hope, disclosed that they also wrote the raps, but could not include them in "Butter" after they "dropped out of a competition."
"We always face competition (when deciding whose works to include in our releases,)" Suga said. "Since we had to make raps in English this time, I studied English hard, but still could not win the battle."
j-hope, who dyed his hair yellow as part of the "Butter" concept added, "It was such a merciless competition."
j-hope, also reminisced about the past 12 months, describing them as a "roller coaster-like" experience. Although BTS could only interact with their fans through online means due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, it still pulled off numerous musical feats and made history. It became the first Korean act to earn a nomination from the Grammys, one of the most prestigious music awards, and topped the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart with its mega-hit, "Dynamite."
"I was insecure and confused at first because so many of our plans fell to pieces following the global health crisis. But amid all this, music was the breakthrough that helped us accomplish so many things. I could truly feel the power of music."
V elaborated, "We have so many performances that we could not showcase to our fans due to the pandemic. This year marks the eight anniversary of our debut, but I am a bit sad to hold numerous events without meeting our fans face-to-face. Nevertheless, I will still do my best."
BTS is poised to premiere "Butter" at the 21st Billboard Music Awards, slated for May 23. It was nominated in four categories ― Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Social Artist and Top Selling Song.
"It is a great honor for us to secure nominations," Jungkook said. "I am glad to know that 'Dynamite' which was released about a year ago, is still winning the hearts of numerous people."
The record-shattering K-pop sensation also disclosed their next goals.
"We will do our best to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart again with 'Butter,'" Suga said.
RM added, "BTS will also make another attempt for the Grammys."
