The web series, "Showterview with Jessi," by SBS's digital studio, Mobidic, is nothing like other talk shows. It breaks the typical format of a talk show, with the host often taking the spotlight over the guest and going off script. The unique format is what has brought this show, which has featured guest stars like Emma Stone, Kang Daniel and HyunA, huge popularity on YouTube, with fans from all around the world.
"I thought that the show would only last for about three months. I didn't know how I should lead it at first, but the producers just let me do my own thing, which encouraged me and inspired me to work harder," the show's host and singer, Jessi, said during an online media conference held Monday to celebrate its one-year anniversary.
"I didn't know it would last this long, because I expected about three or four months maximum. But seeing how the show is growing, it's getting me motivated. So these days, I try to find ways to run the show better."
When asked what she thinks brought the show to success, she confidently answered, "Being me at doing things." As she said, her blunt comments and free-spirited, confident attitude sparks interesting chemistry with the guests and brings comedy to the show.
"There are a lot of great hosts out there. But I'm just having fun... I bet no one can do it 'like Jessi,'" she said. "I don't read scripts. I just go with the flow. So I think I'm good at picking up what might make guests feel uncomfortable or what might not be fun for the viewers."
The show's producer, Kim Han-jin, also added that this show is a deviation from the traditional talk show, and that it instead intends for people to get to know Jessi better.
"What's unique about our show is that we get our viewers to learn about Jessi as a person through our show, which becomes interesting from their perspective," he said. "She's someone who you can never expect what she's going to say next. Because we know that she's going to go off script. It's always thrilling."
Jessi has had a busy year, starting with the mini-album, "NUNA," last July, which won her numerous music awards, with the lead song, "NUNU NANA." She also released a single as part of the group, Refund Sisters, a project that grew out of MBC's reality show, "Hangout with Yoo," later in the year, while starring in other reality shows, like "Sixth Sense."
The singer revealed that she did have times when she wanted to quit "Showterview with Jessi."
"I had to shoot shows and make music, so sometimes I would have to give up something due to my busy schedule. So I would tell my agent that it's too tough," she said, adding that she encouraged herself by thinking about the fans of the show. "So I'm betting on another year. We're just getting started, so it would be stupid to quit now. I want to show fans myself becoming more mature… give them a good laugh for a little longer."
The singer expressed her optimism, saying that nothing gets done easily. "If it's not hard, you're not working hard. I believe everyone's life is tough," she said. "So it's important that you keep a positive mindset and energy … the more you get stressed out, the more optimistic you need to be."
Adding that she has grown through the past year, she said she came to be more understanding. "A year can change a lot about a person. And I feel like I've grown to be more considerate of others (through the show)," she said. "I'm a stubborn person. And I will still have my opinion, but as I grow older, I've come to be a more understanding person."
When asked who she wants to invite as guests, Jessi said that she hopes to see K-pop stars like BTS, Blackpink, MAMAMOO's Hwasa and ATEEZ on the show.
"I really want to invite the Refund Sisters too," she said. "Maybe when I go to Jeju Island, I can interview Lee Hyo-ri for the show."
