Watching Korean movies and learning Korean by themselves paid off for Manice and Selena earlier this month, when the two best friends came in first place at a K-movie and drama parody contest.
They reenacted the gang fight scene from their favorite Korean movie "Sunny".

A: Who's that?
A: Did you bring a middle school kid to intimidate us?
B: Don't look her straight in the eyes.
B: You'll get possessed.
A: Yeah, right.

Under the team name “URIGROOVE”, the two memorized more than 50 lines in Korean.
For days, they re-watched the movie to master their pronunciation.
Though proud of their work, they never imagined coming in first place.

"We screamed, we jumped. We danced. We cried. We cried a little bit.

"We didn't expect it at all. We were proud of our videos. But we thought there were a lot of other great videos, as well."

The parody contest was hosted by the Korean Cultural Center in France.
It was the first time a contest of this kind has ever been held in Europe.
A total of 86 teams participated, posting self-made films on YouTube.
Most parodied dramas like "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God" and the Oscar-winning movie "Parasite".

"France is a booming place for Hallyu, the Korean wave. Now this pop culture is gaining more and more fans in France, so this is the reason why we organized this parody contest in order to meet their growing demand."

"We want to see the Korean culture develop globally. We try to share it with our peers and our family."

"K-content is really entertaining, colorful. And it's really funny. So I think that people can dream about everything they want with K-pop, K-drama, and K-movie, etc."

The Korean Cultural Center in France is preparing to hold the second edition of the parody contest next year.
