Actor Kim Dong-wook will take the lead role in the upcoming TV drama "The King of Pigs," on TVING, the streaming platform run by CJ ENM and JTBC Studios.
The streaming service announced Monday that Kim, Kim Sung-kyu and Chae Jung-an will play the lead characters in the thriller series.
"The King of Pigs" revolves around a man named Hwang Kyung-min, who receives a letter from a friend he knew 20 years ago. Around the same time that he receives the letter, a mysterious series of murders starts to take place.
Kim Dong-wook will play the character of Kyung-min, who is still suffering from the trauma of getting bullied at school about 20 years ago. Kim Sung-kyu and Chae will play detectives ― Jung Jong-suk and Kang Jin-ah respectively ― who trace the mysterious letter that is linked to the ongoing serial murders.
"The drama intends to look into the roots of a type of violence that is prevalent throughout our society," the production team said through the statement.
The show is a drama adaptation of the 2012 animated feature film of the same name by filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho, who is known for directing the apocalyptic films "Train to Busan" and "Peninsula."
The animation was acclaimed globally upon its release, becoming the first Korean animated film to be invited to Cannes Film Festival. It was screened at the festival in the non-competition section.
The live-action TV adaptation will begin production this month.
