Jeon Do-yeon says 'Lost' script made her cry

Actress Jeon Do-yeon is returning to the small screen for the first time in five years through JTBC's "Lost." Her last appearance on television was playing the lead role in the 2016 drama "The Good Wife."
Directed by Hur Jin-ho, "Lost" tells the story of ordinary people who feel adrift in life and try to make their lives better.
Jeon plays the role of Bu-jung, a ghostwriter who feels like she hasn't achieved anything at the age of 40, while Ryu Jun-yeol appears as Kang-jae, who runs a company that rents fake family members, friends or romantic partners for money.
Hur, best known for directing the films "Christmas in August" and "The Last Princess," is making his first foray into a TV drama. Kim Ji-hye, the screenwriter for hit romance film "Architecture 101," penned the script.
The star director revealed that he had neither the courage nor the confidence to helm a TV series, but changed his mind after reading Kim's script.
"Even I didn't know I would be making a TV series. In contrast to a film that goes into production once the script is completed, a drama starts shooting while the script is still being written along the way. So, there were feelings of curiosity and frustration from time to time. It literally felt like making three to four films," Hur said during a press conference for the drama, Thursday.
Hur also shared his thoughts on the title of the series.
"Our drama evokes feelings of existential dread. It's a beautiful odyssey of loss ― material or emotional loss ― when people feel like they've failed to live up to their expectations and how they recover a sense of possibility," he said.
Jeon said she wanted to avoid dramas with dark or heavy subject matters, but "Lost" resonated deeply with her. Merely reading the script for the new series made her cry.
"When I finished reading the script, I was weeping. The story was a little bit dark, but I liked it anyway because it was about finding light in the darkness," she said. "When I said 'I'll do it,' I was asked a lot about how I as a well-known and successful actress will understand the feelings of a woman who has achieved nothing in life. But I was able to relate to Bu-jung's character."
Ryu, whose last TV drama role was in MBC's "Lucky Romance" in 2016, said it was an easy choice to star in "Lost."
"I didn't think twice because I've always looked forward to working together with director Han and actress Jeon," he said. The 35-year-old actor explained that his character Kang-jae differs from other characters in coming-of-age stories.
"Throughout the story, Kang-jae doubts himself and realizes that his deeply held beliefs may just be wrong. I wanted to express his bitter feelings of loneliness."
"Lost" airs on Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30 p.m. (KST).
