A bipartisan coalition of U.S. state attorneys general has launched a probe into the social media giant Meta Platforms, previously known as Facebook , for promoting Instagram to kids despite being aware of its potential harm.
The investigation involves several states, including California, New York and Florida and comes amid increasing scrutiny over the tech giant's approach to children.
This comes especially after a former employee turned whistle blower revealed the company's own internal research on the negative effects that Instagram had on teens' mental health.
The probe will look into whether Meta violated consumer protection laws and put young adults at risk. In response, a Meta spokesperson said that the accusations are (quote) "false and demonstrate a deep misunderstanding of the facts.”
