Seoul was blanketed by a thick haze of fine dust on Sunday afternoon, but the toxic particles could not deter people from flocking to Jamsil Student Stadium to enjoy the "Street Woman Fighter ON THE STAGE" concert, which featured eight female dance crews ― PROWDMON, Coca N Butter, HOOK, LACHICA, HOLYBANG, WANT, WAYB and YGX ― from Mnet's dance competition show, "Street Woman Fighter."
Everyone had to wait in long lines to show either their COVID-19 vaccination certificates or PCR test results before entering the concert venue. They were also prohibited from yelling or screaming during the show to abide by stringent COVID-19 guidelines, so clapping was the only way to express their immense excitement. Nevertheless, they seemed to all have a blast.
"I know all of you desperately want to shout out loud to cheer us up, but please refrain from doing so," WANT's leader Hyojin Choi, who rocked the stage despite her ankle injury, said. "If you support us with your clapping, we will pay you back with more passionate performances."
The eight crews opened the show with their jaw-dropping group performances, pulling off various dance genres, ranging from hip-hop to waacking. The dancers then set the crowd on fire by staging the performances they had previously shown on "Street Woman Fighter." Among them, the performance of David Guetta's "Hey Mama" (2014) ― in which WAYB's leader Noze crafted the choreography ― pumped up the party mood, with the leaders of all the crews creating spectacular harmony without ditching their own styles and moves.
PROWDMON also stole the scene by bringing its bubbliness to the fore through its performance of "Gee" (2009) ― a smash-hit by K-pop act Girls Generation. The crew, which is famed for its power and charisma, successfully displayed its unexplored side and proved its well-roundedness.
In a nutshell, "Street Woman Fighter ON THE STAGE" was a fascinating combination of "old and new." Some performances were already familiar to the audience who had watched "Street Woman Fighter," while others were totally fresh. In particular, the concert offered WAYB and WANT, which were eliminated early on "Street Woman Fighter," an opportunity to exhibit their untapped sides to the crowd.
The highlight of the 180-minute show was a dance battle. Six dancers ― Gabee (LACHICA), Jihyo (YGX), Dolla (WAYB), Yebon (HOOK), Rozalin (WANT) and Honey J (HOLYBANG) ― went head-to-head with one another, but this time, the battle was more like a party for everyone. It was not as fierce as the competitions on "Street Woman Fighter," but was still full of surreal dance moves and overwhelming energy.
"Street Woman Fighter ON THE STAGE" also attempted to engage the audience in the concert. When all dancers went backstage to gear up for their next performances, two MCs popped up on the stage and asked the audience to imitate some well-known choreography from "Street Woman Fighter." One of the concertgoers, who was wearing the same wig that Gabee put on for the program, literally stole the show with her flawless imitation and took everyone on the spot by surprise.
At the end of the show, the members of the eight crews collaborated with each other, visually showing that they are all now friends and not rivals. PROWDMON and WAYB joined forces to perform CL's "Doctor Pepper" (2015) while WANT and YGX commanded the stage with their "Eat You Up" (2015) and "Better" (2020) gigs. Coca N Butter and HOOK were a team and HOLYBANG partnered up with LACHICA.
"I hope this concert never ends," Honey J, the leader of HOLYBANG, said as she wrapped up the concert.
But the eight crews' journey has not ended ― they are scheduled to play five more concerts nationwide until Dec. 25.
