JTBC's audition show, "Sing Again," is set to premiere a new season, following the success of its first, which ended with a 10 percent viewership rating in February.
Led by chief producer Yoon Hyun-joon, who also created the music show, "Two Yoo Project ― Sugar Man," the show's purpose is to provide a second chance for lesser-known singers who have never been in the spotlight before.
"The show brings competitors together to set their titles aside and compete solely with their talent," the chief producer said in a written interview, Tuesday.
The first season garnered huge popularity, launching its top three finalists ― Lee Seung-yoon, Jeong Hong-il and Lee Mu-jin ― into stardom. The tickets for the after-show concert featuring the top 10 finalists sold out within minutes.
Producer Chae Seong-wook, who is joining the show for the new season, noted that the contestants' journey of finding their identity as musicians will win the hearts of viewers once again.
"For one-hit wonders, nameless singers or those who have the talent but never had the chance to gain popularity, the show is an opportunity ― if not the last chance ― for them to prove themselves as musicians on stage. And the viewers will be touched and sympathize with that heartwarming journey," Chae said. "Taking the know-how from the first season, we will be presenting more advanced stages for the music performances on the show."
The new season will see the previous season's host, singer and actor Lee Seung-gi, team up with the same judges: singers Lee Sun-hee, Yoo Hee-yeul Sunmi, Kyuhyun of Super Junior and Lee Hae-ri of duo Davichi, rapper Song Min-ho of Winner, and lyricist Kim Ea-na. It will also welcome rock musician Yoon Do-hyun as a new judge.
The chief producer said that he felt inviting Yoon Do-hyun was the best decision they had made. "The judges of Sing Again are comprised of top musicians from various genres. And Do-hyun is the leader and vocalist of the top rock band, YB," he said. "The fact that he also went through a long time before gaining popularity also made him the perfect fit for our show."
Chae added that judges' genuine advice and consulting for the contestants will make this show stand out from other music audition shows.
"The difference between our show and other similar genre shows is that the host and the judges have a different depth of interaction (with the contestants)," he said. "All of the judges had their own time in the dark or as trainees before becoming who they are now. So they really resonate with the contestants and give them warm words of advice."
He also noted that season two will have more variety in music genres from the contestants. "We were able to have contestants ranging more diverse genres. So the performances will be perfected more and have more variety," he said.
JTBC's "Sing Again 2" will premiere Dec. 6.
