"Squid Game" has become the first Korean TV show to win a Gotham Award.
The Netflix hit series won in the category for breakthrough series of over 40 minutes.
Accepting the award, the series' Director-writer Hwang Dong-hyuk said it took 12 years to make the series, but less than 12 days for it to become a worldwide hit.
He said no one liked the script in 2009 when he first pitched it, with production companies calling it "unrealistic" and "weird."
The lead actor of "Squid Game" Lee Jung-jae was nominated for Outstanding Performance in a New Series but didn't win.
The Gotham Independent Film Awards are presented annually to makers of independent films at a ceremony in New York City.
