Naver Webtoon has confirmed the production of a film adaptation for the English webtoon "Death of a Pop Star," with involvement from renowned Hollywood figures like Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and producer Mason Novick. The webtoon has achieved over 33 million global views and tells the story of a pop star who receives a second chance at life on Earth after an encounter with the god of death.
Wattpad Webtoon Studios, Naver’s North American production arm, will oversee the film's creation. Established in 2021, the studio focuses on adapting webtoons and web novels into visual content. This project is part of Naver's broader strategy to expand its global content portfolio, following previous successes like the Netflix film "Through My Window."
The adaptation highlights Naver Webtoon's efforts to grow its IP ecosystem by integrating webtoons, novels, and films. This move signals a strategic push into the global market, with Naver establishing production hubs and partnerships worldwide to capitalize on the growing demand for diverse storytelling.
