Detail

The Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee has approved a bill requiring foreign game companies to designate a domestic representative in Korea. Proposed by Democratic Party lawmaker Kang Yoo-jung on June 3, the bill seeks to address concerns such as unclassified game ratings and the lack of transparency regarding probability-based items, which disrupt the domestic gaming environment.
The bill, an amendment to the 'Game Industry Promotion Act,' imposes penalties of up to 20 million KRW for failing to comply with rating classifications, prohibited actions, and game content disclosure requirements. It aims to enforce accountability among foreign game companies providing services to Korean consumers.
This initiative responds to ongoing issues in the Korean gaming market, where users have faced abrupt service terminations and undisclosed probability rates for in-game items by foreign companies. A similar attempt by Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Sang-heon during the 21st National Assembly did not pass.
