Interview with Sung, Beom Kyung Fashion creative director at GAESIGI
In the global K-fashion market, the “retro” trend is evolving beyond simple revival into a more refined
“retro- chic” strategy -- one that fuses nostalgia for the past with a contemporary sensibility.
In particular, reinterpreting historical meaning and traditional elements through a modern lens has emerged
as a distinctive form of K-fashion storytelling and a new source of competitive edge.
For this interview, we spoke with Seong, Beom-Kyeong, Creative Director at GAESIGI, a leading force behind
some of the most inventive modern interpretations of nostalgia today. Under the theme “K-Fashion’s New
Retro-Chic Strategy,” we explored the appeal of Korean nostalgia, along with practical insights into translating
elements of the past into a contemporary design language.
Creative Director Seong launched the historical design brand Gaesigi , building a unique design territory
that integrates socially conscious values through successful collaborations with CU and LG U+, including
projects centered on Dokdo Day and Korean women independence activists.
He later founded the fashion brand Ieodeul, earning national recognition with a Silver Award at the 41st
Korea Fashion Competition and selection as a Musinsa Incubation Brand. In recent years, he has focused on
expanding K-fashion’s global footprint through consecutive appearances at international fashion weeks.
