Interview with Seo, Beom Kang Chairman at KWIA

K-webtoons have become a central pillar of the global content industry.

As they capture audiences far beyond Korea, the sector continues to generate significant economic and

cultural impact. Yet, building a sustainable growth model—supported by clear strategic vision and

a well-structured industry ecosystem—remains a crucial challenge.

For this interview, we spoke with Seo, Beom-Kang, Chairman of KWIA, to explore the theme “K-Webtoons:

Strategies and Vision for Global Expansion.” Our conversation delved into the key challenges facing

the K-webtoon industry, the strategic priorities needed to strengthen global competitiveness,

and what it will take to build a more resilient and future-ready ecosystem.

Chairman Seo is an author, critic, and creator across comics, webtoons, and picture books.

He has played a pivotal role in bridging industry and academia, previously serving as President of

the Cartoon & Webtoon Federation and Senior Board Director at the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency.

Through publications such as How to Become a Webtoon PD and Seo Beom-Kang’s Webtoon Economics,

he has offered rigorous analyses of industry structure and future trajectories.

His contributions have been recognized with distinctions including a commendation from the Minister of

Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Content Awards.
