Heroes of the Sea Who Staked Everything on Their Ships: What Did These Vessels Mean to Them?
The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of liberation and the 75th anniversary of the Korean War. While the war has often been remembered through battles on land, this documentary seeks to reconstruct and fully honor the Korean War from a maritime perspective.
The Korean Navy, which was established first among the three branches of the armed forces, initially had no combat ships apart from 34 outdated vessels provided by the U.S. Navy. Today, 75 years later, the U.S.-based military analysis institution Global Firepower (GFP) evaluates the Republic of Korea Navy as the world's fifth-strongest, with a fleet of 90 combat vessels, including Aegis-equipped warships. This transformation represents the growth of the ROK Navy into a key pillar of Pacific peace under the robust U.S.-ROK alliance.
Behind this miracle were visionaries who believed in the future of the sea and heroes who devoted their lives to protecting Korean waters with their own hands.
The Korean War 75th Anniversary Special Documentary: Codename 1950 (working title) examines the war through the lens of two central themes: "ships representing the vessels themselves" and "the people who safeguarded the sea and their lives." This fresh perspective will honor the courage and dedication of the heroes of that era while proposing how we can fortify today's peace.
The documentary carries added significance as a Korea-Hawaii co-production, featuring on-site coverage from both regions to provide an enriched narrative.
