Summary
[Genre] Historical · Occult Mystery
[Logline] A demon who once lured me into a suspicious bar recounts—boastfully and at length—the tales of how he corrupted human souls.
[IP Planning Intent]
● A fresh combination of the occult motif of "meeting with the Devil" and the framework of a Korean historical mystery.
● The literary strength of the 2024 Korean Mystery Writers Award “Golden Pen” recipient.
Following Madame Black Swan Requests a Difficult Story: 1928, Busan—a work that revealed the allure of historical mystery set in modern-era Busan—the boundary-defying storyteller Mugyung (無境) now presents a tale of the Devil himself.
The tragedy of history in this book lies in the choices of ordinary people—weak, ambitious, and easily swayed—who ruin both others’ lives and their own. With exceptional skill in unveiling the darker strata of history and the complexities of human nature, Mugyung poses a piercing question through the Devil’s voice: Is a life without corruption truly possible?
[Story Summary]
At a bar, a mysterious stranger approaches me with unusual confidence. Urging me to choose carefully between the smoky Ardbeg 10 and the balanced Ballantine’s 17, he insists that I am worthy of hearing his long tale tonight. His story hovers between truth and fabrication, but it is unsettlingly captivating. Then, calmly, he declares:
“I am the Devil.”
He begins to recount how, over decades, he has led souls into corruption and delivered them to hell. I wonder why he has chosen me. What story awaits me at the end of this night? And why does he raise a glass to my safe corruption? He smiles as if he already knows what lies within me.
[Narrative Structure]
1. Introduction (Beginning):
In early December, during a harsh winter storm, I find myself in a suspicious bar beside a man who claims to be the Devil. He offers me drinks in exchange for listening to tales of how he has corrupted human souls—chanting like a ritual: fine liquor, captivating stories, and tempting souls.
His first tale takes place in December 1951, deep in the mountains of Jirisan, where soldiers pursue a hidden partisan leader. The Devil, disguised as Sergeant Ma, manipulates ambition and compassion alike, ensnaring both the corrupt Lieutenant Yun and the idealistic Sergeant Park—claiming both their souls in the end.
2. Development (Rising Action):
The second tale unfolds in 1992 amid the chaos following a failed rapture prophecy. Within a cult called Cheondangwon, betrayal, fanaticism, and ambition consume the believers. A false messiah rises from among the police, fire consumes the sect, and the Devil—disguised as a gatekeeper—collects the corrupted souls with satisfaction.
3. Climax (Turning Point):
The third tale takes place in 1987, during a turbulent era of democratization and speculation. Greed, deception, and secrets of the past converge inside a collapsed mine, where the Devil reveals himself and demands desperate bargains from those trapped inside. Choices are made, souls are corrupted, and only death remains unbargained.
4. Conclusion (Ending):
Finally, in 1973 under the Yushin regime, the Devil dons the mask of a police sergeant in an interrogation chamber. Familial bonds, ambition, and fear entwine in a harrowing test of loyalty and morality. Whatever choice is made, corruption is inevitable.
At last, the Devil turns to me. He declares that I too am corrupt, that my downfall is certain—and that he has come to witness it. Then, interrupted by an alarm on his phone, he vanishes with a mocking farewell: “May you safely fall into corruption.”
