Cinema Paradiso of Pungjin-dong
Summary
At the far edge of Seoul, in the quietly overlooked neighborhood of Pungjin-dong, a small single-screen cinema opens its doors during the pandemic. On her first day as manager, Haru—a medical student on leave who prefers solitude—is unexpectedly left in full charge when the owner abruptly departs overseas.
As the Galaxy Cinema begins to draw an eclectic group of regulars—a former fund manager turned drifter, an insomniac restaurant owner, and a film translator who slurs his words when drunk—the theater becomes a space where seemingly isolated lives begin to intersect.
Through fleeting moments of kindness and subtle connections, the characters gradually step into one another’s worlds. Rather than dramatic plot twists, the novel delicately traces the inner movements of its characters, capturing the quiet emotional shifts that shape their lives.
Interwoven with references to films, music, and memorable lines, the narrative unfolds with a cinematic sensibility, inviting readers to both see and feel each moment. A tender and introspective work, this novel explores life, death, love, and human connection through the intimate lens of cinema.
