Summary

An Autobiographical Narrative of the Korean War and Women's Lives

Eumcheon is the first Korean-language novel by Korean-American author Maeja Lee. “Set against the backdrop of the Korean War, Euncheon offers a deep exploration of family, identity, and destiny through the life of the female protagonist, Euncheon. The story, told from the perspectives of various characters, including Yin-chun, Gui-yong, Mina, and Su-yang, delicately depicts their internal conflicts, fiery feelings of jealousy and hatred, and their struggles to survive the national disaster of war and rebuild their lives after the war. Through the eyes of a young girl, the film vividly reveals the process of women's awakening to social participation and rights amidst patriarchal traditions and war. The absurdity of the idea of boy preference and the psychological damage of being a woman are explored in depth, and family tensions and personal conflicts are comprehensively addressed.

“The book honestly depicts the oppression and psychology of women and sheds new light on the impact of the Korean War on women. The story resonates deeply with contemporary audiences and encourages readers to reflect on their own lives and relationships. This book will resonate with readers interested in the history of the oppression of women in modern times, the history of common life during the Korean War, and the literature of overseas migrants, as well as mothers, adoptive families, and women who are interested in the psychological development of women who are vicariously devoted to their children's success.

Lee's Voices of Heaven won the Forward Reviews' Publication of the Year Award (Multicultural, Military and War) and was a finalist for USA Best Books (Historical and Cultural Fiction). He is also the recipient of the Thorpe Menn Literary Excellence Award and the Independent Publishers Book Awards for e-book fiction.
