FormatEast is a combination of Format and East, meaning that the West, the origin of format industry is currently paying significant attention to Korea content and hence we aim to become a representative hub of Asian format business that will take the lead in the format market in the coming future. Established in 2018 December, FormatEast is a 100% subsidiary, a format distribution arm of SBS where we aim to discover, create, and develop new global content IP targeting various channels and platforms from all over the world. Through such mission, we intend to establish a new IP business ecosystem that centers around Asia in the current format industry that’s centered on Western market and become the hub of worldwide IP distribution. Furthermore, FormatEast also aspires to expand its business areas utilizing format IP through global marketing, global co-production, production consulting, format conference- education business, production management/networking, global format research and development.
Business Description
1. Independent production of new formats
a. Successfully launched and secured an IP of a new real estate-themed entertainment show “Moved” on TV Chosun, one of the cable broadcaster in South Korea in June 2019.
b. Successfully launched and secured an IP of entertainment show “Good Friend” on SBS Plus in September 2019.
c. Plan to launch “Universe Ticket” a global talent audition show on SBS in November 2023. Format IP has already been secured.
2. FormatEast Creative Lab Project - FC Lab Project
a. from 2019 to 2022, FormatEast was selected as an official operating company of Korea Content Creative Agency (KOCCA) ’s government-funded “Format Lab Project”.
b. Gathered 10 Korea's top-notch creators with more than 15 years of experience and held global seminar with international format professionals every month in order to co- develop new unscripted formats. IPs are co-owned by FormatEast and the creators.
c. Developed a total of 200 unscripted formats: 50 IPs were developed each year.
d. Sales of “Lotto Singer”. Its first season was aired on MBN in 2020, and completed an option-contract with Fox Alternative Entertainment (FAE).
e. Sales of “DNA Singer”. Its first season was aired on SBS in 2022, and completed a format license deal with Fremantle Media. (Worldwide rights except Asia) First season of ‘DNA Singers’ Dutch version aired on RTL4 in the Netherlands throughout January and February 2023.
