Summary
Based on Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 gothic novella Carmilla, the musical Carmilla shines a light on the emotions, desires, and identities of those who live under oppression. With delicate nuance, it portrays the shadows and affections that dwell within the human psyche. Reimagining the familiar vampire narrative through a fresh lens, the piece explores emotions that lie on the boundary between love and fear, and brings to the stage—quietly yet powerfully—themes of identity, alienation, and the emotional awakening of young women.
