Summary
In the Middle Ages of Korea, there was a woman in a small town located on the banks of a river. One day, she slept with a monk. Unfortunately, the monk was a drifter. He left without any promise of return. Shortly afterwards, she realized that she got pregnant and gave a birth to a baby boy. As her son grew, so many thoughts started to whirl around in his mind. He wanted his mother to get married to a nice man so that she may become happier and thought it would be easier for her to share times with her congenial partner together if the son were to disappear from her. His concern grew more and more, and finally, he decided to become a Buddhist monk. Soon after, he left his home forever.
Since then, his mom searched all over for him. Her heart ached from missing him so much. Nothing could make up for the loss of a child. Eventually, she became blind from after-effects of the pain caused by trauma. It would be impossible to recognize her son without the eyesight. At that moment, a brilliant idea came to her mind. She decided to do ‘Mujusangbosi', washing monk’s foot. This was a tradition of Buddhism. It meant practicing goodness without any thought of recognition by others, or practice of charity, generosity, or offering without any thought of receiving offering. She decided to search for her son by washing as many monk's foot as she could.
In the meantime, her son happened to hear the story of his mother; although he already renounced the world and became a monk. Can they be reunited again? This is the beginning of the story.
