Summary
A gem of a Korean occult novel that was hidden for 22 years. This novel, which features many ghosts, goblins, and spirits unique to Korea, including “Guimae”, a monster ghost created by the aggregation of negative energy in nature, is filled with eerie and mysterious charm.
Guimae follows a group of university students researching Korean folk beliefs as they investigate a small, undeveloped village in Busan. “Hyerin”, who can exorcise ghosts, and her immature but brave friend, “Sung-jin,” who can sense ghosts, encounter a goblin guarding the village and promise to help defeat the “guimaes” that have been swarming the town. What begins as an exorcism to avoid being harmed by the goblin gradually leads them into the center of a vast conspiracy. Hyerin and Sung-jin are being targeted by someone who wants to harness the immense anger of the beings who were sacrificed in a cruel ritual that took place in the village in the past. Will they be able to uncover the village’s secrets and escape the tragic rituals that are about to begin anew?
