Summary
Yi Do possesses extraordinary genius — by the age of seven, he has already devoured every classical Chinese text in existence: the Four Books, the Five Classics, the Tongkam Gangmok, and the works of the Hundred Schools of Thought.
The Shaman Federation detects his exceptional mastery of Chinese characters and recruits him as a boy sorcerer into the Magic Village School. There is, however, one cruel condition: upon turning twenty, every sorcerer loses all memory of the magic they have learned.
Through his study of Hanja sorcery, Yi Do gains the ability to communicate with Chinese spirits — and through them, he uncovers a devastating truth.
When the people of Joseon die, they become slaves to the Chinese characters that have governed their lives. Their souls are dragged away by Chinese spirits. Souls are bound to the script they use. Without a writing system of their own, the dead fall under the dominion of the ghosts who wield that script.
The vengeful spirits of Han Chinese scholars who failed the imperial examinations in life now roam Joseon, hunting down Korean scholars and condemning them to the same fate — an eternity as failed-exam ghosts.
At the apex of this shadow world stands the Ink Ghost Emperor — a being who rules over all literary spirits, and who seeks to subjugate every soul across the entire Hanja civilization.
Yi Do fights back. He conjures his spells not in Chinese characters, but in the pure, untainted language of Joseon itself. The new script nullifies the Hanja curse. The Ink Ghost Emperor is driven out of Joseon.
Twenty years later — Yi Do sends a secret letter to his former self.
