Logline

Mia, the daughter born from rape by a fallen nobleman.

A pitiful portrait of a woman who was sold to a blind slave and ended up trapped in a cycle of tragedy.

Synopsis

Being born is the beginning of misfortune

Mia was born between the fallen nobleman Yu Geon-chang and the slave Mak-rye. Her misfortune began when Yu Geon-chang raped the virgin Mak-rye at a funeral home and impregnated her. Her mother Mak-rye was treated as a criminal in Yu Geon-chang’s household and lived every day in tears, doing hard labor. Despite this environment, Mia grew up to be a beautiful young woman with a clear forehead and calm eyes.

Face the cruel reality

Witnessing her best friend Deok-sun being raped by the nobleman Lee Man-jong, Mia realizes how terrible this country is for women. When Kim Saeng-won tries to take Mia as a concubine, she feels frustrated and meets the Hwang-Sang, but she falls deeply in love with him. Before Hwang-Sang leaves for Seoul, the two promise to marry, but he does not return, and in the meantime, Kim Saeng-won dies of an epidemic. Mia coldly judges that standing alone is the only chance for freedom for a woman. When Mia discovers that Deok-sun has been killed by Lee Man-jong, she bursts into tears, enraged by the unreasonable world.

Losing myself, just like the name my grandfather gave me

The relationship between the two is over, but Hwang-Sang helps Mia from the police officer who invades the house and exploits her. The police officer, who holds a grudge, rapes her, and Ma Dong-sik, the catcher who had been in love with Mia, kills the police officer and runs away. Yu Geon-chang hides the fact that his daughter has lost her chastity and sells her to the rich and blind Jeombachi Park Pan-su, forcing her into marriage, and Mia falls into a cycle of misfortune from which she cannot escape. Park Pan-su treats Mia like a servant, beating, starving, and raping her, and even joins in tormenting his children from his previous marriage. Mia suffers through her days.

Escape and tragic ending

Unable to bear Park Pan-su's abuse, Mia decides to commit suicide and throws herself into the sea, but survives. She runs away to a hermitage deep in the mountains, meets Mu-yeon and Seon-yu, and decides to become a monk, healing her wounds. However, Mia is captured when Park Pan-su moves the government office to find the temple. Mu-yeon, who protected her, dies on the punishment chair, and Mia is taken back to Park Pan-su and made to live with a leash and padlock like a dog. She escapes again when surveillance is lax, but is eventually caught and taken away while being stoned by people. At the age of nineteen, Mia walks toward the end of her unfortunate life.
