Summary
In the near future, Korea opens the first virtual reality public school and names it Hakdang. The main character, On Sihyun, is selected as a student in the second intake of the school. But Sihyun, more than the excitement of entering the world’s first virtual reality school, is intrigued by the prospect of seeing Hakdang up close. His mother is a virtual reality designer and an architect of Hakdang. He had visited the school through VR goggles before the school had even opened, thanks to his mother, and even made a secret room in the school’s library Hongmungwan, unbeknownst to her.
On the day of his orientation at Hakdang, Sihyun heads for Hongmungwan to check if his secret room is still there and witnesses a ghost coming out of the room. Zephirum, a student-run cybersecurity club at the school dedicated to catching bugs and guarding the safety of the students, confirm Sihyun has witnessed a ghost and asks him to join their club. Zephirum has a former child actor named Gunnie as their mascot of sorts, and they are more popular than student council. Noah, who has a gravitas unusual for his fifteen years, and Suri, who always argues with Gunnie about everything, makes Sihyun wonder if he really fits into Zephirum.
Then on the first day of school, everyone witnesses a strange ghost that flies over the podium. Na Jiyul, the head developer of Hakdang, casually suppresses the ghost and says, Hakdang is still in beta and that the students with disabilities could not be accommodated in special classes. This speech makes waves in the media and a special class is created. This classroom is not visible to the other students, and they exist on a layer separated from the others, a space that the others cannot see or visit.
To some, this may not seem like a big deal. But to Sihyun, whose mother is hard-of-hearing, this treating of students with disabilities as ghosts enrages him, and he decides to join Zephirum. The club then makes a plan to bring their friends with disabilities into the rest of the school.
