No Wedding
Summary
No Wedding is a novel that explores the emerging marriage trend of “no wedding.” It follows the love story of Yuna, a woman in her mid-twenties who decides to get married without holding a ceremony, and her partner Haein, while also tracing the intertwined histories of their two families.
True to a long-standing promise, Yuna and Haein decide not to hold a wedding ceremony. They believe that skipping the ceremony will free them from the burdens of preparation. Yet the process of preparing for marriage gradually becomes overshadowed not by the joy of “us,” but by growing anxiety, shaped by countless outside interventions and commercial algorithms. Meanwhile, whenever fragments of the past unexpectedly surface and stir Yuna’s emotions, the boundaries of what she calls “family” begin to waver and blur. Dresses, the tightening laces of a corset, and forced smiles—each element becomes like a subtle jinx within the institution of marriage, slowly constricting Yuna’s heart.
Through this process, the novel delicately captures how the social ritual of marriage can distort the meaning of love and unsettle the inner lives of individuals. It confronts, head-on, the anxieties and doubts that remain hidden behind the spectacle of a glamorous wedding, as well as the raw psychology revealed when love collides with social institutions. This is a work that will resonate not only with those preparing for marriage, but with any reader who reflects on the true nature of love and life.
