GONZO’s 2004 series Samurai 7, a science-fiction reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954), is rebuilt as one feature film.
After a great war, former samurai turned mechanized bandits, the Nobuseri, raid the farming village of Kanna every harvest. Kirara, a water priestess, goes to the city and gathers seven samurai, each with a different past, who take the farmers’ side for nothing but rice. The alliance of peasants and warriors, the fortification of the village and the final battle, and the ambitions of the merchant Ukyo behind the bandits are compressed into one feature-length arc that carries the original’s core, the weak uniting against the strong, into today’s theatrical format.
Co-developed by GONZO (Japan), Moon Bandits (US/Singapore) and Movie Ball (Korea), which brings data-driven IP matching, co-development and the financing structure.
